The direct answer: the best hyaluronic acid serum is one that combines at least two molecular weights — hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, whose smaller fragments can settle into the skin's outer layers, plus sodium hyaluronate, which holds water at the surface. The percentage on the front of the bottle is close to meaningless, because hyaluronic acid works at fractions of a percent and behaves completely differently depending on the size of the molecule. And no hyaluronic acid serum performs well unless you apply it to damp skin and seal it with a moisturiser, because it is a humectant — a water magnet — not a moisturiser in itself.

Why "2% hyaluronic acid" is a marketing number

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule your skin already makes. It sits in the epidermis and dermis holding water — binding many times its own weight in water — and its levels in the epidermis decline noticeably with age, which is a large part of why older skin reads as drier and less elastic (Papakonstantinou et al., Dermato-Endocrinology, 2012). So topping it up topically is a reasonable idea. The problem is how it gets sold.

Pure high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid at a true 2% would turn a serum into a stiff, ropey gel you could barely spread. So when a front label shouts "2% hyaluronic acid," it almost always means 2% of a diluted hyaluronic acid stock solution, or 2% of a branded "HA complex" that is mostly water. That isn't quite lying — but it tells you nothing about whether the serum will work. In real formulas, effective hyaluronic acid content is a fraction of a percent, and what determines the result is not how much you use but which molecular weights you use.

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid vs sodium hyaluronate: two names, two different jobs

Flip any hyaluronic acid serum over and you'll find one or both of these INCI names. They are not interchangeable.

Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, and in most serums it is a large molecule. Large is not a flaw — it just defines where it can work. The gaps between cells in your outermost skin layer measure roughly 15–50 nanometres; a conventional hyaluronic acid molecule is dramatically bigger, so it stays on top (Jegasothy et al., Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2014). There it forms a flexible, water-binding film: the instant smoothing and plumping you notice right after applying. Useful — but the effect lives and dies with that surface film.

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is the same molecule deliberately broken into much smaller fragments. Research on low-molecular-weight and nano-scale hyaluronic acid suggests these fragments can reach deeper into the stratum corneum than their full-size counterparts, where they may help the outer layers hold water rather than just wearing a film of it — in the study above, the smaller-particle form was associated with measurable improvements in hydration and the appearance of fine lines over eight weeks. The felt difference is a softness that persists after the surface film has long since dried down.

Neither form is "better." They work on different floors of the same building, which is exactly why a serum should carry both. How to read a hyaluronic acid label in 60 seconds

You don't need a chemistry degree — you need this checklist and the back of the bottle.

  • Find both INCI names. Scan for Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and Sodium Hyaluronate. One name alone means a single-weight serum; both means dual-weight. This single check does more than any front-label claim.
  • Don't panic when they sit low on the list. INCI lists run in descending order of concentration, and hyaluronic acid is effective at fractions of a percent — so it belongs in the bottom half. On our own label the two forms sit side by side just past halfway down, and you'll find the same placement on serums costing three times as much. A serum that listed hyaluronic acid first would be an unusable gel.
  • Check the supporting humectants. Hyaluronic acid needs co-workers: glycerin, betaine, sodium PCA, aloe. If the first five ingredients are just water and thickeners, the hyaluronic acid is doing all the lifting alone.
  • Look for something that softens the exit. A light emollient in the formula — jojoba oil, squalane, a plant triglyceride — helps slow water loss while you reach for your moisturiser. Not mandatory, but a sign the formulator thought about real use.
  • Treat undisclosed percentages as decoration. A big number with no molecular-weight information is marketing. A brand that tells you which forms it uses is being straighter with you than one advertising a percentage.

The rule nobody prints on the box: humectants need a lid

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. It doesn't create water; it grabs whatever water is nearby. That has two practical consequences that matter more than which serum you buy.

Apply it to damp skin. Within a minute of cleansing, while your face still holds surface moisture, is when a hyaluronic acid serum has the most water available to bind. On bone-dry skin you're giving a sponge nothing to soak up.

Seal it, always. An unsealed humectant film simply gives its water back to the air — and in very dry air, some formulators believe an unsealed humectant can even pull moisture in the wrong direction. A moisturiser on top turns the serum's grip on water into hydration that stays put.
