The Minimalist Skincare Routine: What to Use (and When)
Share
Minimalism in skincare isn't about doing less for the sake of it. It's about doing the right things — consistently — without overwhelming your skin or your counter.
If you've ever wondered whether serums go before moisturizer, or if you can use more than one serum at a time, here's a simple framework that works for most routines: cleanse, treat, hydrate, moisturize.
This guide is informational only (not medical advice). If you have a skin condition or are under medical care, check with a qualified professional.
The order matters (because texture matters)
A good rule: apply from thinnest to thickest. Water-based layers first so they can sit close to the skin. Richer gels and creams last to help seal everything in.
Step 1: Cleanse (AM + PM)
Start with a gentle cleanser like our Cleansing Foam to remove overnight oil (AM) and sunscreen + buildup (PM). Clean skin helps the rest of your routine apply evenly.
- If you wear sunscreen or makeup, cleanse thoroughly in the evening.
- If your skin feels tight after cleansing, that's a sign to reassess frequency or water temperature — lukewarm is your friend.
Step 2: Treat (AM and/or PM)
"Treat" is where targeted serums live. You don't need a dozen. Think in pairs that make sense.
Morning: Vitamin C
Our Vitamin C Serum is commonly used in the morning because it helps support a brighter-looking complexion and pairs well with sunscreen in a modern routine.
- Apply after cleansing to dry skin.
- Start a few times per week and increase as your skin tolerates it.
Allergen notice: Glaciara's Vitamin C Serum contains Sweet Almond Oil (nut-derived). If you have a nut allergy or sensitivity to nut oils, do not use this product. Always read the ingredient list and patch test before first use.
Evening: Peptides
Our Peptide Anti-Aging Serum is often chosen at night as part of a routine focused on the look of firmness and smoothness.
- Apply after cleansing.
- Keep the rest of the routine calm and hydrating.
Step 3: Hydrate (AM + PM)
Hydration is not the same as oil. A hydrating serum like our Hydrating Serum helps your skin look plumper and feel more comfortable — especially in air conditioning, winter, travel, or after active days.
- Apply hydrating serum after treatment serums (or as your "treat" step if you're keeping it very simple).
- Use it whenever your skin feels tight or looks dull from dehydration.
Step 4: Moisturize (AM + PM)
Moisturizer is your final step — it helps lock in hydration and supports a balanced feel throughout the day or night.
Our Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser is a great everyday choice if you prefer a weightless finish that still feels polished under sunscreen or makeup.
Always: Sunscreen (AM)
Sunscreen is the most important morning habit. Even the most thoughtful routine feels incomplete without daily broad-spectrum SPF. Glaciara doesn't currently offer an SPF — source one you trust and apply it as your last morning step.
Two routines that stay effortless
The 3-step morning (fast, effective)
- Cleansing Foam
- Vitamin C Serum (or Hydrating Serum if you're keeping it extra gentle)
- Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser
Finish with sunscreen.
The 3-step evening (quiet, restorative)
- Cleansing Foam
- Peptide Anti-Aging Serum (or Hydrating Serum on simpler nights)
- Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser
How to combine multiple serums without overdoing it
If you're using more than one serum, keep it intentional:
- One "active-style" serum + one hydrating serum is often plenty.
- If your skin feels sensitized, scale back to cleanser + hydration + moisturizer for a few nights.
The minimalist mindset
Consistency beats complexity. The goal is not to "chase" your skin — just to support it with a routine that feels calm, clean, and repeatable.
If you want a simple place to start: choose one treatment serum (Vitamin C Serum guide in the morning or Peptides in Skincare at night), add hydration, and keep moisture + sunscreen steady.
