How to Layer Skincare Products (Without Overthinking It)

Skincare layering has become one of those topics that's somehow both simple and overcomplicated at the same time. The internet is full of elaborate 12-step routines, conflicting advice about which ingredients can't be mixed, and diagrams that look like chemistry homework.

The reality is much simpler. There's one core principle, a few practical rules, and after that, it's mostly common sense. If you've ever wondered whether you're applying your products in the right order — or whether it even matters — here's everything you need to know.

The One Rule That Governs Everything: Thinnest to Thickest

Almost every question about skincare layering order can be answered with a single principle: apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency.

The logic is straightforward. Lightweight, water-based products need to reach the skin first because they contain smaller molecules that absorb quickly. If you apply a heavy cream before a watery serum, the cream creates a barrier that prevents the serum from penetrating effectively. You've essentially wasted it.

Thinnest to thickest ensures each product can absorb properly before the next one goes on. That's it. That's the rule.

In practice, this almost always translates to the same sequence: cleanser, toner (if you use one), serum(s), moisturizer, sunscreen (morning only). The specific products change, but the order stays consistent.

Your Morning Routine, Step by Step

The morning routine has two jobs: prepare your skin for the day and protect it from environmental damage. Here's the order:

Step 1: Cleanse. Even though you cleansed the night before, your skin produces oil and sheds cells while you sleep. A gentle morning cleanse removes that residue without stripping your skin. Something like the Glaciara Cleansing Foam — formulated with rose flower water and chamomile — does the job without over-cleansing.

Step 2: Serum. Morning is the ideal time for antioxidant serums, particularly vitamin C. Antioxidants help defend against the free radical damage caused by UV exposure and pollution throughout the day. Apply a few drops to clean, dry skin and pat gently until absorbed.

The Glaciara Vitamin C Serum, with stabilized ascorbyl glucoside and ferulic acid, is designed specifically for this step — brightening and protecting in a lightweight formula that layers well under moisturizer.

Step 3: Moisturize. Even oily skin benefits from a moisturizer. It seals in the serum, supports the skin barrier, and prevents the dehydration that can actually trigger more oil production. A lightweight gel formula absorbs quickly without feeling heavy.

The Glaciara Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser works well here — 5% niacinamide continues to work on tone and texture while locking in hydration.

Step 4: Sunscreen. Always last (among skincare products, before makeup). SPF 30 minimum, broad spectrum, applied generously. This is the most important step in any morning routine, full stop. No serum or moisturizer will protect your skin from UV damage the way sunscreen does.

Your Evening Routine, Step by Step

The evening routine shifts focus from protection to repair and renewal. Your skin's natural repair processes are most active while you sleep, so this is when you apply your more intensive treatments.

Step 1: Cleanse. The evening cleanse is the most important one of the day. It removes sunscreen, makeup, pollution, and the accumulated grime from hours of living. If you wear makeup or heavy sunscreen, you might benefit from a double cleanse — an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve product, followed by your regular cleanser to clean the skin itself.

Step 2: Treatment serum. This is where peptides, retinoids, or other repair-focused ingredients go. For concerns like fine lines and firmness, a peptide serum applied in the evening gives those ingredients uninterrupted hours to work while you sleep.

The Glaciara Peptide Anti-Aging Serum — with dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline and hexapeptide-11 — is formulated for this exact purpose: evening application for overnight support.

Step 3 (optional): Hydrating serum. If your skin runs dry or you want an extra moisture boost, this is where a hydrating serum fits in. Applied over your treatment serum and under moisturizer, it adds a layer of deep hydration.

The Glaciara Hydrating Serum, with dual hyaluronic acid and cloudberry extract, provides that moisture surge without heaviness. It layers beautifully under the gel moisturizer.

Step 4: Moisturize. Same concept as morning — seal everything in and support the barrier overnight. Your skin loses more moisture while you sleep than you might think, so don't skip this step even if you've applied a hydrating serum.

Can You Use Multiple Serums at Once?

Yes, but keep it reasonable. Two serums in one routine is fine — especially if they serve different purposes (one treatment, one hydrating). Three starts to get redundant. More than three and you're likely diluting the effectiveness of each one.

The key is to apply them in order of consistency (thinnest first) and give each one a moment to absorb before applying the next. You don't need to wait five minutes between layers — 30 to 60 seconds is usually enough. If the product is still sitting wet on your skin, give it another moment.

Common Layering Mistakes to Avoid

A few things that can undermine even a well-chosen routine:

  • Applying sunscreen before moisturizer. Sunscreen should always be the last skincare step (before makeup). Applying it under moisturizer dilutes its protection and compromises the SPF rating.
  • Mixing too many actives. Using vitamin C, retinol, AHA, and niacinamide all in one routine sounds thorough, but it can overwhelm the skin. Split strong actives between morning and evening, or alternate days.
  • Skipping moisturizer because you used a serum. Serums deliver active ingredients but most don't provide the occlusive layer that locks in moisture. Moisturizer is still necessary, even if your serum feels hydrating.
  • Applying products to wet skin (unless directed). Most serums and treatments absorb best on clean, dry skin. Applying them to a wet face can dilute the product and reduce absorption. The exception: some hyaluronic acid products work well on damp skin, as the moisture gives the HA something to hold onto.
  • Rushing through the steps. Slapping products on one after another without letting each absorb can lead to pilling (that annoying balling-up effect). Give each layer a moment to settle.

The Glaciara Routine as an Example

To put all of this into practice, here's how the full Glaciara range layers — morning and evening — following the thinnest-to-thickest rule:

Morning:

  1. Cleansing Foam (cleanse)
  2. Vitamin C Serum (treat and protect)
  3. Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser (moisturize)
  4. SPF (protect)

Evening:

  1. Cleansing Foam (cleanse)
  2. Peptide Anti-Aging Serum (repair and renew)
  3. Hydrating Serum (optional moisture boost)
  4. Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser (moisturize)

Five products, two routines, no confusion. Our routine page maps this out visually, step by step.

Layering skincare isn't complicated once you know the rule. Thinnest to thickest, morning and evening, with sunscreen always last in the morning. Everything else is just details.
